Smoke, Mirrors and Revolving Doors
One of the most famous wrestling terms, "Forbidden Door", refers to the fact that once you're working for a company, you can't take your work elsewhere, even if you're only there as a freelancer or part time. For years, this magical term made fans idealize dream matches between promotions and while some encourage it, others prefer to keep it locked with seven keys. However, during the pandemic, AEW decided to open all of their doors to every promotion that wanted to open theirs in return. Did this benefit everyone? Maybe not, maybe it was all smoke and mirrors. But that'd be a discussion for another day because today there's something far more special happening. Something that could've only been done by a woman that is, by far, one of the most beloved trailblazers in women's wrestling.
Mickie James was always ahead of her time in WWE. And while at times it seemed they knew exactly the size of the diamond their crown held, others they would treat her as a gift ten days after Christmas. This inconsistency meant that Mickie spent years going through the motions, from one unfinished storyline to another, despite the fact that everything she accomplished was by opening doors that were previously closed. In fact, fans have been clamouring that Mickie has done more than enough to be inducted into the Hall of Fame before she hangs up the wrestling boots.
However, Mickie James has made it clear that her boots are made for walking and this time she's using them to walk a road never once travelled before. For the first time ever, WWE rolls out the red carpet for someone working in another company to waltz into the Royal Rumble. Some thought this would never happen while others firmly believe they saved this moment for a very special occasion and it couldn't be much better than Mickie James being the one to cut the ribbon after everything that happened.
A champion on Impact and a pivotal figure in NWA, Mickie James is about to show the world that there's a reason why WWE's headquarters have a revolving door in their entrance: nothing is ever closed because what goes around comes all the way back around.
