The Strange Case of The 2022 Women's Royal Rumble

Royal Rumble. Considered by many as the most exciting wrestling event of the year, Pat Patterson's creation has provided numerous magical moments and very few disappointments. Between the surprise returns from legends and the vibrant energy of having 30 individuals compete in the same match, the Royal Rumble has every ingredient to be great. However, despite the fact that on the days and hours preceding it, the media chaos surrounding the women's match made it seem as if fans were about to be strapped into the wildest rollercoaster up to date, the result was quite frankly underwhelming. And no one should personally blame themselves for it because it wasn't the fault of any hardworking women in the ring. Sadly, what happened was simply the fact that sometimes even the best chef in the world can't make a good dish with a full pantry of gourmet ingredients.

  One of the most famous wrestling terms, "Forbidden Door", refers to the fact that once you're working for a company, you can't take your work elsewhere, even if you're only there as a freelancer or part time. For years, this magical term made fans idealize dream matches between promotions and while some encourage it, others prefer to keep it locked with seven keys. However, during the pandemic, AEW decided to open all of their doors to every promotion that wanted to open theirs in return. Did this benefit everyone? Maybe not, maybe it was all smoke and mirrors. But that'd be a discussion for another day because today there's something far more special happening. Something that could've only been done by a woman that is, by far, one of the most beloved trailblazers in women's wrestling.
